Dear Parents,

As you know head lice is an ongoing problem among school-aged children. Children are educated about head lice starting in kindergarten and multiple times there after through the 8th grade. They are taught and continuously reminded not to share combs, brushes, headbands, hats, scarves, etc.

Effective control of head lice calls for COMPLETE treatment and follow-up of each infested child by parents. We have a nit free, lice free policy. Students will be sent home with active head lice and/or nits, even if their hair has been treated.

If your child has head lice, it is very important that it is reported to the school nurse at 438-2626. All information reported is confidential. Random head checks are performed throughout the school year.

If your child is sent home with head lice, he/she must be treated and all nits (eggs) must be

removed before returning to school. I will check your child before he/she is readmitted to the

classroom. If nits or lice are present, your child will be sent home.

If your child is sent home with lice, you must follow these steps to ensure complete removal of lice and nits.

  • Treat your child and everyone who lives in the household with lice shampoo. Lice shampoo
  • can be purchased over the counter, follow instructions on the bottle exactly.
  •
  • Remove ALL nits (eggs, small and white, resemble dandruff) with a fine toothed comb. Any
  • nits that don’t comb out can be removed with tweezers, fingernails, or cut out with scissors.
  •
  • Vacuum all carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, mattresses, and seats and headrests of you
  • car.
  •
  • Wash all recently worn clothing (including coats and backpacks), recently used towels,
  • sheets, and linens in hot, soapy water and dry in hot dryer for at least 20 minutes.
  •
  • Non-washable bedding, pillows, or clothing should be vacuumed.
  •
  • Furry and fuzzy toys should also be vacuumed or washed, and then placed in sealed plastic
  • bag for 2 weeks.
  •
  • Soak all combs, brushes, headbands, etc. in hot water (at least 130 degrees) for at least 10
  • minutes.
  • Report infested student to school nurse.
